Daily Scripture Series – Aug. 22nd

“Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.” (Jeremiah 1:8)

Jeremiah is one of the Bible’s unbreakable characters. He endure enemy plots, was whipped and put in stocks, flogged and bound in a dungeon, and lowered by ropes into the deep mire of a cistern. He survived because God had promised to stay with him and rescue him. God makes a similar promise to us: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” God didn’t promise to save Jeremiah or us from trouble, but He has promised to carry us through trouble.

We need to realize that when we have troubles, we don’t stand alone and that God is always there by our sides.

Jeremiah 1: 4-10

The word of the lord came to me, saying: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

Bonus Information

Of all the passages in Scripture showing us the sovereignty of God, this is one of the most direct. God says to Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you”, and He singles him out to be “a prophet to the nations”. God spoke these words to Jeremiah, and they had a special application for his particular mission. God would use him to “uproot and tear down” kingdoms as well as “to build and to plant”. god may not use us to uproot kingdoms, but the principle of His sovereignty applies to us every bit as much as it did to Jeremiah. He knew each of us before we were even conceived, and He’s chosen us for His god purposes.
