Important Biblical Words – #1

In a world that claims words matter, even to the point of changing the meanings of words, to telling people what they can and cannot say, it’s important to note that words DO matter, especially the words that far too many people are ignoring and those words would be God’s Words. The words that we find in the Bible tend to be ignored more and more each day as society moves closer and closer to the cliff that will lead them into the dark abyss.

This special series is going to go over 101 special God-breathed words that are words that transform and are bursting with life. Far different from the words coming from society that are killing our souls. Even though ALL words in the Bible are of great importance, these 101 words are nouns, verbs, exclamations, and adjectives that provide us with an overview of the glorious and timeless story known as the Bible.

All the words found in the Bible that tell us a wonderous story and why the world isn’t the way God had originally designed it to be, what He has done in Jesus, and is doing through His Holy Spirit, to make all things new; and how taking His words to heart can transform people and the world if they would only listen.

Our First Word is GOD

This is the basic generic name for the main character in the Bible.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)

When you read the very beginning of the Bible, there is no mention of neutrons or isotopes, or cosmic microwave backgrounds. Instead the beginning reads much more like a celebratory poem, not some science book text. It just states that before and behind all things there is a much greater Cause. “In the beginning, God…”

This is why this 101 list of words begins with GOD because the Bible, the actual book of God, starts with God.

On it’s face value, God is a very tiny word but it has infinite implications. Elohim is the Hebrew generic name for deity, even pagan deities in the Old Testament. Elohim is also used in plural form as well which points to the tri-unity of God in three divine persons that exists eternally as three very distinct, coequal, coeternal persons, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

All good stories start by introducing its readers to the world of the story and to its protagonist, which is the story’s main character.

So, meet God/Elohim, our protagonist, the hero in this story of stories, the Bible. All things start with God and revolves around God. Right from the beginning we know for sure that God is a very powerful Creator. In the very beginning of Genesis, we get the sense of what God wants, He wants a beautiful world that He can share with all of the creatures who were said to be made in His image.

The rest of God’s book reveals many other fascinating names and titles for our God. But in the beginning of the story, it’s Elohim, who effortlessly speaks galaxies, and gardenias, genes and jellyfish, people and wild animals all into existence.

Take a few moments to simply marvel at the incredible world in which you live. Seriously think of any other possibility that the stunning complexity and beauty of the cosmos and of you could just be the result of eons of time and just blind chance! If you find that impossible, then you’re on the right track.

Questions to Ponder

  1. What words come to your mind, and what emotions fill your heart when you hear the word God?
  2. Lets say two atheists were hiking and came across the word “Help!” written into the dirt trail, they wouldn’t consider that this message came about by chance, by some thunderstorm blowing branches and stones across the path. Why then do some people resist the idea that our complex world had an intelligent designer?
  3. Why do you think skeptics consider the universe the result of impersonal forces over eons of time and just a big cosmic accident?

100 words to go. I hope you will enjoy the rest of this series and I also hope that it will help to encourage you to read the Bible more than you might do right now.
